These Boots Are Made For Walking

Once again the heavens opened today, and once again I was wearing the wrong shoes. And whilst it was comforting to see that chivalry isn't dead when a kind gentleman scooped me off the floor outside Waterloo station, I don't fancy falling over again. So, I am going to buy a pair of boots. Below is my wish list and my "I can actually afford these" shortlist.

Which ones should I go for?

The Wish List....

Office Chic

We've been recruiting at the day job and I've been on the interview panel. The dress code in our office is generally quite laid back - jeans, dresses, leggings, pretty much anything goes, but for the interviews I wanted to make a little extra effort. So I decided to smarten up a bit (not that I'm normally scruffy of course, I prefer the term laid back...) And do you know, it actually felt good. Wearing something that little bit smarter made me feel a bit smarter. I wouldn't go as far as to say power dressing, but a blouse, a little bit of tailoring and killer heels go a long way. And whilst I'm sure I'll soon revert to my jeans and ballet pumps, I'm keeping up my office chic for now and loving it.

Here is one of my outfits of the week, what do you think?

Blouse - www.aliceswardrobe.com - £22.00
Trousers - Top Shop - £38.00
Shoes - Top Shop - £70
Handbag - Oasis - £35.00

Goodbye sandals, hello shoes...

We're not even in September and I've not been able to wear open toed shoes for the past week. To help make the transition from summer to autumn a little easier, I've been looking at shoes online. If my feet have to be caged away then they should at least be in something pretty. And my goodness, these shoes are pretty, I hope you enjoy these as much as I do...

Burberry Brit Leather Ballerina Pumps - £195

Rupert Sanderson Patent Loafer - £430

Lanvin Crystal Embellished Suede Ballerina Flats - £445

Beautiful Bracelets...

I'm off to a wedding this weekend. Dress - sorted. Shoes - sorted. Handbag - sorted. Leggings to secretly wear under dress if it's cold (it is England) - sorted. But I still feel like something's missing. The dress I'm wearing is very simple and although it's very elegant I think it needs something extra. It's got quite a high neckline so a necklace won't work. And those fascinator things ( or as my gran calls them titilators) just aren't my style. So I started looking at bracelets. There are some gorgeous gorgeous pieces out there at the minute, and I wanted to share them with you.

These first pieces are amazing.....

Lanvin - Fleur Strassee Crystal Cuff -  £775.00

Roberto Cavalli - Swarovski Crystal Embellished Feather Cuff - £485.00

Husam El Odeh - Cuff With Tangled Chains - £255.00

These next pieces have a similar feel but are a little more affordable...

Dorothy Perkins - Mesh and Bead Clamp Bangle - £12.50

Eclectic Eccentricity - Light As A Feather Bracelet  - £15.50

Oasis - Large Woven Cuff - £12.00

Let me know what you think of them...

Where it all began...

The whole point of my online shop Alice's Wardrobe is to bring a little bit of the fashion from Hong Kong to the UK. So I thought it might be a good idea to explain why. It all started a good few years ago ( I'm not going to say how many, it makes me feel old)  when I went to study in Hong Kong for a year as part of my university course. It was my first time living away from home. It was my first time living  in a new country. And it was my first time living in a new culture. And it completely changed my life. Hong Kong is a truly amazing place. Some people love it.  Some people hate it. There is no other place like it in the world like it.

The most obvious thing to talk about would be the the clothes. And I will do. But not yet. First I want to talk about the people, after all it's the people that make the place and it's also the people that make the fashions. Now, I know I'm about to make a sweeping statement, and I know it's not right to generalise whether it's for good or bad, but I'm going to anyway. The people of Hong Kong are awesome, there is something about this Island (and that little bit of the mainland) which is very very special.

I hate to even try and put a label on it. I'm not generally a  fan of crappy pop psychology. But here's my two penneth worth on the people of the Fragrant Harbour. I think Hong Kong is so unique because it's a culture of contradictions. It's a culture that fiercely guards it's heritage and history but is completely obsessed with new technology ( a friend of mine upgraded his phone 5 times in one year out there. I kid you not). It's a culture where teenagers approach their studies with such seriousness and maturity but at the same time can be incredibly naive (most of the girls in my lectures at university came with Hello Kitty back packs). Even the landscape of the country itself is full of contradictions, within half and hour you can go from high rise jungle, to actual jungle to beautiful beaches.

This is one of my favourite ever photos from HK. Wedding pictures on the beach. Of course.

And this sense of contradiction follows through to the fashion. The clothes in Hong Kong are incredibly simple but incredibly detailed at the same time. Every single element of an item of clothing is considered. For example the Champagne coloured blouse on my store looks quite ordinary at first glance, but the buttons have this lovely sparkly effect and it has vents in the back to give it a gorgeous trapeze shape.

And it's this type of detail and thought that I became obsessed with. It's this attention to detail that made me fly half away around the world with an empty suitcase for shopping trips. Now, please don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing English fashion and English designers (Vivienne I bow to you, Mulberry I'd sell my soul for you) and I'm not dismissing the shopping experience in England at all (you just try and keep me from the shops on the first Saturday after pay day) but I genuinely feel that Hong Kong fashion has that little something that's a bit different to offer and I have made it my mission to bring that little something to you.

I'm back....and so is Gossip Girl

So. It's been quite a while since I've blogged. To be honest the last few months have been kind of crazy. Between running Alice's Wardrobe, the day job, and being a sister, aunty, daughter, friend and girlfriend there just haven't been enough hours in the day. But enough of the woe is me. I have started reading some brilliant blogs and have felt inspired. So from here on in I promise to blog at least once a week, to give those of you, who are vaguely interested, an insight into the workings of Alice's Wardrobe and also an insight into the workings of Alice.

With that in mind, OMG. (I'm not normally one to embrace this text speak but when you see what it's about you'll realise why). I have spent far too many hours looking at pictures from the set of Gossip Girl season 4. Gossip Girl is my weakness. I'm not sure whether it's the clothes, the glamour or even just Chuck Bass, but it makes my brain go a but mushy.

Here are a few of my favourite behind the scenes pics. Serena, in a gorgeous DVF dress, some gorgeous gorgeous tan shoes and of course because it's Serena, a fair amount of boobs. Blair showing us how to clash, in a gorgeous red frock with with a pink clutch. And finally Chuck. Ah Chuck. One of my favourite ever words is dapper. That just doesn't quite cover it. EVERY man should own a pin striped suite and a cane.

And with that, I will leave you, I'll be back soon. Promise.

Phew. I'll post pictures as soon as they arrive. Next challenge is working out how to make search engines recognise me..... In the meantime look at my new lovely short domain name www.aliceswardrobe.com
